Will movie theatres ever become extinct?
00:37. I just came back from the movie theatre. I finished watching the new Spiderman movie. The movie was good. But today’s post is not about the movie. It’s about the experience of watching movies in the theatre.
As I was watching the movie and having a great time munching on popcorn, I started thinking if these theatres will ever become extinct. With the increase of streaming services, movies have become easier to access. No longer do you need to wait for the movie to come in theatres or on DVD to watch. As long as you are subscribed to a streaming service you have access to a bunch of movies. Although ironically there are so many streaming services you need to subscribe to to get all the content. You can’t just subscribe to one.
Anyways back to the point of this post. As I was watching the movie I was trying to justify the existence of these theatres. I argued to myself that theatres give a unique experience of watching a movie which can’t ever be matched. No matter how rich you get and have your own theatres, going to a public theatre is a whole different experience. From the moment you buy the ticket to the ending of the movie, it’s a beautiful experience. No matter how many times you have the experience every time it feels unique. Then there’s the food at the theatre. Doesn’t matter what kind of theatre it is, popcorn inside a theatre always tastes the same for me. It always feels like a part of the movie experience. If you go to the theatre you need a popcorn and drink to complete the experience. I haven’t yet mentioned the experience of watching a movie on a big screen and the great sound experience. Because I believe you can get a similar experience if you ever have a personal home theatre. But the other things I mentioned you can’t get them elsewhere.
Well, that was my argument about why theatres won’t become extinct. But that is just me and maybe I am biased because I just finished watching a movie at the theatre. Maybe in the future, you will get a better experience just by putting on a VR headset. Or maybe there will be a few theatres left in the next 50 years and only a few will go there just for the unique experience.
