How memories attach to a place

As I said in my previous blog, I am back to Beppu. A city I have lived in for more than 5 years. I consider it my second home after my actual home Dhaka, Bangladesh. I had my most formidable years in this city, the most important parts of my 20s, and the years where I grew the most as a person.
Today was my first day back in the city after a year. I decided to go to Oita, a city nearby. Just 20 minutes by train. I used to work there near the station. After graduation, I joined a small cram school. I decided to pay a short visit. It was quite interesting to me but nothing to write about.
But as I was roaming around the city I ended up going to Oita Castle. It’s not as big or popular as other castles in Japan but it is special to me. There’s this red tori gate inside the castle area where I took a photo back in 2018. I was in a really weird phase of my life but I remember that day in front of the gate when I took the photo I was quite happy. It was a day to remember and I wanted to recreate that photo.
As that picture was being taken, it made me think. To most people, this very spot is just another spot. Nothing special. But to me, memories are attached to this very spot. Every time I will think about this spot it will remind me of that day and today. It’s fascinating how the human mind works. How things become important to us. I am pretty sure I will back to that spot a few years later and write another blog. But till then I am waiting for another day tomorrow in the beautiful town of Beppu.
