“Do not pray for an easy life; pray for the strength to endure a difficult one.”

This is will be another short blog. The last two days have been a bit tough for me. But things seem to be getting back to usual. While on my run today reflecting on the past few days this quote came to my mind-

Do not pray for an easy life; pray for the strength to endure a difficult one.
— Bruce Lee

During my childhood, I first read about this quote. Probably around the time when I was trying to sneakily watch Enter the Dragon. Although my uncle said it wasn’t for kids. I did manage to watch the movie but I never managed to grasp the magnitude of this quote.
As a child I thought, why would you not want an easy life? Who doesn’t want an easy life? Come on Bruce Lee, take that easy life. I thought the easy life was the dream. So this quote never spoke to me when I was a kid.
But as I grew up and most importantly during today’s run, it really spoke to me. It’s in humans’ nature to overcome challenges and conquer. It’s natural for us to break barriers. But it’s really unnatural for us to do sit around and do nothing. That is why when as kids we waited for our vacations but when vacations came around we waited for school to start. The routine of the school gave our life some purpose or direction but during vacations a lot of days we had nothing planned. Those were the worst. Same thing as the concept of an easy life. An easy life, a life where you aren’t actively participating isn’t a life lived well. Your life will have ups and downs and actively participating in this life, experiencing it is the way to go. That is why you need to build up the strength to go through this beautiful life. Every challenge you overcome, you should rejoice. But you should then get ready for the next one. Challenges are what make the heroes out of the characters in movies. Without any challenge of saving the world, no heroes are born. Just like that if you imagine you are a character in your movie, the challenges are what you should look forward to. Because that’s what will make you the hero of you story.
