Would you pay for Wikipedia subscription?
I was listening to the Waveform podcast. The guest was Hasan Minhaj. A great episode. I highly recommend it. In one of the parts of the podcast, he talks about Wikipedia and how underrated it is. He also talks about the possibility of Wikipedia changing to a monthly subscription. How many people would pay for it?
This got me thinking. I asked a few friends and most people said no. It got me thinking more. I also realized what Hasan wanted to point at. The convenience of Wikipedia is very underrated. We use it almost every single day. Every time there is something that we don’t know, the first place we go to is Wikipedia. This something is most of the time simple definitions. But every time Wikipedia is there with the information we need.
Imagine if every time you wanted to get that simple definition you had to pay. Or there were ads. It would become really irritating. It becomes a big inconvenience. You wouldn’t realize it unless Wikipedia is down. When we do feel that inconvenience we might want to pay. Or some new company might come in and replace Wikipedia.
For now, it’s free. It survives on donations. But who knows how long will it survive.
