The difference between finding your way and making your way
Today during my morning run, this thought came to my mind. This thought about finding your way and making your way.
A lot of people talk about finding your way. They tell you that you need to work hard and find your way. Finding you way is important but it is also not enough in some cases. In some cases, there are walls around you and you need to build your own door and make your own way. That’s the difference between good and great. That’s where humans and superhumans differ.
Here comes the really unusual example from the movie ‘The Shawshank Redemption.’ It is one of the most-watched and most popular movies. There’s a lot to learn from the story and if you are a cinematographer, a lot to learn from the way it was filmed. But today I want to talk about.
When Andy Dufresne was in that prison, he needed a way out. He could have waited and found a way out. Finding a way out would mean looking for all the available options within the prison system. That way out would never work for him. He was surrounded by walls and the only way he could get out was to make his own way. That’s exactly what he did. He didn’t wait for finding his way out. Because there was no way to be found. He had to make his way out. He had to be patient, plan, and then execute.
If you are on a tough path in life, on a path to greatness, you need to understand that somedays you have to build your own path and make your own way out.
This might make absolutely no sense to anyone. So I will stop now and go off to bed.
