My problem with Ramadan

Ramadan starts tomorrow. It’s a very special month for Muslims. I love the overall feeling around Ramadan. But while waiting for Ramadan it reminded of something I noticed when I was back home in Bangladesh.
Ramadan has a beautiful significance. It’s not just about abstaining from food and drink from dawn to dusk. It’s also about abstaining from bad activities and doing more good. it’s about exercising willpower and self-control. It can help a human in multiple ways. But when I was growing up in Bangladesh, this significance was kind of lost.
Every year I would wait for Ramdan, not for the true meaning, but for the food. Every Ramadan restaurants in Bangladesh would offer special iftar menus for Ramadan. All you can eat offers and campaigns. This sure did add to the festivities of the month but the problem was when it became the main anticipation of the month. The point of abstaining from food and drink isn’t about having a grand special iftar. It’s about understanding how privileged and lucky we are compared to others. It’s about understanding how those who are less fortunate feel. It’s about being thankful for the life we have been given. But when the sole purpose becomes waiting for the special iftar, it kind of loses its significance.
I don’t know if I only feel like this. But if you also do, do let me know. Also Ramadan Mubarak or Happy Ramadan to everyone. I love the month of Ramadan. Lots of positivity around this month. If you are someone willing to make some good changes in your life, this is the month to go forward with them. It’s a way of resetting your life.
