Casey Neistat Vlog 001

Casey Neistat is a big inspiration for any online filmmaker growing up around 2015. His daily vlog revolutionized how people treat vlogging. It also challenged creators on Youtube to up their level. Just like everyone else he is a big influence on me. I got introduced to him by a friend and ever since I discovered him I never stopped watching his videos. Even though he has stopped making videos regularly I often rewatch his old vlogs.
There is a lot to learn from Casey Neistat and his style of storytelling and filmmaking. He himself recently released his own course on monthly. I am not able to afford his course at the moment but his Youtube is a free source to learn from for any creators.
Since his vlog series is what skyrocketed his Youtube growth, I wanted to revisit all of his vlogs and write one blog for every vlog he made in his series. I think he made 534 daily vlogs. That’s a lot of blogs to write. But he is my favorite video creator and I wouldn’t mind rewatching and writing about all his vlogs.

Mar 27, 2015

We go back all the way to March 27, 2015. Back to Casey’s birthday.

My First Vlog

The vlog is actually recorded on March 25th, 2015 which is his 34th birthday. He is in the Caribbeans in the first shot but immediately as he is explaining his announcement he switches to his studio in New York.

At his studio, he explains how a lot is happening in his life at the moment. We also get an appearance from Karlie Kloss who appears a number of times in the daily vlog. At minute 1:00 he switches to a different shot probably the space that becomes 368 in the future. 1:05 he switches to a different shot in his studio. Minute 1:22 is when the announcement comes ‘‘I am going to make a movie every single day’’ This one announcement changes not only his Youtube career but for a lot of future vloggers. At minute 1:27 he switches back to the Caribbeans. Then finally he switches back to the beginning of the day which starts in NYC.
The first few shots were with his DSLR but at minute 1:46 you can see his Canon G7X. For the rest of the vlog, he mixes up both cameras.
As you watch the rest of the vlog you can realize that this is the first one of the series. You don’t see the usual timelapse, the drone shots, or the quick montages that you see in his future vlogs. But this is the start and you can see that he is figuring things out. One thing I notice always is how he mixes up the music. He never uses one music track for the whole vlog. He always uses different tracks. He also wants to give the vlog an amateur-feel with some of the shots. If he wanted he could get the perfect shots but he wanted the viewer to be there through the day. Since it was a hectic day for him, that’s what you get through the vlog. He celebrates his birthday. The day ends and thus the vlog is born.
