Thoughts of a United Fan
I have been a United fan ever since I understood what the game of football is. It is thanks to my father that I started supporting United. But it wasn’t just because I grew up watching United. Even after growing up, I couldn’t find any other club that attracted me as United did. I also did a report on the history of Manchester United, which made me love the club more.
That’s about all the good things you will find in this blog. From here its all downhill. If you know anything about the world of football, you know what’s going on with Manchester United.
Ever since the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson almost a decade ago, Manchester United has gone to the ground. Over the last 10 years, we haven’t even come close to winning the league. The funny thing is the closest was last season and this season somehow became the worst. You would expect us to get better after last season, but it got worse.
There are a number of things that have contributed to the downfall of Manchester United in my opinion.
Sir Alex Ferguson was a special man. He kept the whole club running for 25 years. He was the glue that kept the club together. There were many cracks in the club, but he made everything work. The problems started to show when he left.
After he left, we needed a shift. We needed a big change. But for some reason, United still wanted to do things the way Sir Alex Ferguson did them. We wanted to hold on to the glory days. We brought in a manager who wasn’t proven with winning titles. We then kept on changing managers. We never focused on the proper issues within the club.
One of the biggest issues was the owners. Yes, they did put money into transfers, but they weren’t football people. Even a lot of the management weren’t football people. It was more about the commercial profits. This was the foundation of all the other problems.
That foundation leads to problems in the structure of the club, the recruitment, the players, etc. Every season it started to become the same thing. We brought in a number of managers but most of the time they were impulse decisions. They were short-term thinking. Even the appointment of OGS was a sudden decision. Even though he gave us one of our best seasons since SAF, we had no long-term planning. It all started to break down after this season started. I don’t know why it happened this season, but you could clearly see the whole card house falling down.
Finally, OGS left and Ragnick was appointed as a short-term solution. This decision was both good and bad. But the performances on the pitch kept getting worse. After a lot of planning, they ended up recruiting Erik Ten Haag as the permanent manager. There were also a lot of changes within the upper management. Will things change? Who knows. I have no idea. I am writing this after watching us getting thrashed by Brighton 4-0. But with the season we had, not surprised.
