The benefits of writing a script for a video

I have been making videos for more than 5 years. I started back in 2016. Over that time I have improved a lot of video-related skills. Especially the skill of video editing and being on camera. But there’s one skill that I have struggled with which has directly impacted my videos. It has been the practice of writing a script.
I have tried writing a script for my videos, but most of the time I have failed. I have tried instead of making outlines and that somewhat has been better. But the quality of my videos didn’t change spite all my experience with videos. I realized one fundamental problem was making turning ideas I thought were great into great videos. My execution has a big lacking and the biggest one has been script. I have shied away from writing scripts and always gave time as an excuse. But I never accepted the impact a good script would have on my videos. Finally, I decided to stop giving that excuse and start improving my writing. This blog is a part of that process. Another part was Matt D’Avella’s Youtube course. The main reason I joined the course was to improve the script and story of my videos. I knew how to shoot and edit a video, I knew how to talk to a camera and I knew how things work on YouTube. But I struggled a lot with my scripts.
Today I had the lesson where Matt talked about his process of turning an idea into a great video. I finally finished the lesson on script writing and I would have to say it was brilliant. It was everything I expected and more. It gave me the payoff I required even before completing the course. Right after that lesson, I sat down to write a script for a video and it happened instantly. I found better structure in my writing and I could visualize my script better than ever before. Instead of the script being a barrier to creating videos, it ended up simplifying my shooting process. I can’t wait to work on this skill more.
