How to plan for failure
For the next 4 weeks, I have to do a lot of planning. I didn’t expect the plans to happen so early, but now I have to start planning. While thinking about planning reminded me of the idea of planning for failure.
It doesn’t mean planning so that you fail. What would be the point in that? It means to plan and expect failure. It means to plan around that failure. Whenever you plan something, keep in mind that things will go wrong and your plan will never be 100% perfect. Unless you are living in a movie, then that’s different.
Let’s look at the example of planning tasks. Whenever you have a task to do always keep more time than you think it will take you. If a task takes 20 minutes in your head, keep 40 minutes or an hour for it. Keep some buffer time. This time is important. This time might end up helping you accomplish in 20 minutes because you have that extra time in mind. But if you just allot the 20 minutes, you will be in a rush.
This is important for any kind of planning. Whether it is time or money, always keep a buffer. Always plan for failure. Trust me it will help. This blog is actually for me to remind myself. I have to plan a lot of things this week and I have to keep this in mind.
