How 7 years in Japan changes your reaction to earthquakes

I am sitting at my desk. I am working. I am trying to figure this problem out with my colleague. The ground shakes. We both look at each other. Then we go back to working as the ground keeps on shaking.
Yes, that was an earthquake. And yes we just sat there and continued working. That is what happens when you have lived in Japan for too long.
Japan is famous for a lot of things. One of them being earthquakes. I have experienced my fair share of earthquakes. The biggest one was the Kumamoto earthquake in 2016. I still remember that day vividly. It was a crazy two weeks of after-shocks.
But ever since that earthquake experience my reaction to earthquakes changed. I don’t react that quickly unless it’s a big one. If it is a small one like today, I just go back to what I was doing. This is exactly what I saw my Japanese friends doing 7 years ago when I arrived in Japan. They were also used to the feeling of the ground shaking.
